The classic neural pathways of the parasympathetic nervous system are the primary regulators of pulmonary smooth muscle tone. Postganglionic parasympathetic efferent nerves mediate both cholinergic contractions and (iNANC) relaxations. It is the close balance between these two that ultimately determines airway caliber. Pre-clinical studies suggest that the relatively low voltage pulsed electrical fields delivered by the AlphaCore device activate vagal afferents that then stimulate (via a parasympathetic-sympathetic reflex arc) an efferent, sympathetically mediated release of catecholamines from the adrenal glands, resulting in smooth muscle relaxation.
